Social Issues and Alcoholism
When it comes to alcoholism, the idea of hurting your physical self is not the only idea you need to consider. Many times when someone has problems dealing with alcohol or their alcohol addictions, they fail to even think about the social affects of alcoholism. This matter becomes very important when we look at society as a whole, and consider each person’s impact on it. It is very easy for someone to claim that they are only hurting themselves, but in reality, they are hurting much more than just their bodies.
Alcoholism is a disease that ravages a person’s body, yes. It takes its toll on each organ in a person’s body and really affects how they are able to live their lives. But there are also social implications that no one ever talks about when it comes to alcohol abuse. Many times there is an impact on society as a whole.
It is important to note that in society it is not acceptable to be drunk all of the time. The idea of someone having an alcohol problem, until lately, was not discussed very often because of the social implications. However, in recent years, there has begun a move towards social acceptance of alcoholism on a grander scale.
There is an impact on society when someone is abusing alcohol. The person’s friends and family fail to be an important part of their lives, and social lines break down. A person might distance themselves from everyone, and from society as a whole, and become a sort of outcast, alone with their drug addiction. When we are dealing with alcoholism, we find lots of cases in which a person doesn’t get the help that they need because their family and friends have been cast aside in favor of the alcohol, and they are no longer surrounded by people who would usually be willing to help them with their problems and support them. We also find many times in which a person’s family is not surprised to learn they have an addiction, because they have been doing things that are not at all like them, and the person’s family notices this yet they are unwilling or unable to do anything about getting them in a drug rehabilitation program.
When a person is involved with alcohol in a negative way, they will push aside the people that care about them. Often times it is very hard for friends of someone who has an alcohol addiction to be able to deal with them, be able to support them through their trying times and get them drug rehabilitation. When this happens, the person who is an alcoholic feels even more left out, and turns even more to alcohol to help them feel better.
Society as a whole suffers because people who are dealing with alcoholism get wrapped up in their problems and need to rely on government assistance in order to get better. When this happens, taxpayer and government money must be used in order to heal people. When people stop showing up at work, and lose their jobs because of their alcohol addiction, society also suffers. When there are cases of drunk driving, or physical abuse because of alcohol use, this is also detrimental to society. Beacause of this there are many government and privately funded drug treatment centers
Even though alcoholism is a disease that affects one single person, everyone who knows this person and society as a whole as well are affected by this abuse of alcohol. In order to fully heal, a person must fix all of the relationships that he or she has ruined while they were on alcohol, and they also need to begin to repair the damage they have caused society by working hard and picking up in places they might have neglected before.
